The Aboriginal Languages Subcommittee is focused on the issue
of Aboriginal language revitalization in British Columbia. The subcommittee
consists of representatives from organizations throughout BC which include
post- secondary institutes, bands, tribal councils, K-12 schools and cultural
foundations.
The subcommittee works on initiatives which will encourage and enhance educational
opportunities regarding the many BC Aboriginal languages.
Recent initiatives include:
Aboriginal language course development
The annual facilitation of a First Nations language conference
Working closely with the First People's Heritage, Language and Culture
Council to provide input on behalf of BC to the National Taskforce on Aboriginal
Languages
who are determining federal funding for language revitalization
The organization of a biannual Maori Language Tour to New Zealand
