Effective and appropriate record keeping is a fundamental part of a school’s operations. Specifically, maintaining thorough records is an important part of a school’s efforts to track student progress, monitor attendance, ensure smooth transitions, enable a continuation of services during student transfers, coordinate services and maintain accountability for programs and services.

The First Nations Schools Association (FNSA) and First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) have prepared this Handbook in an effort to assist schools in adopting and maintaining student records in ways that reflect effective practice and that meet their needs.  The Handbook provides information related to student files, confidentiality, and student record policies and procedures.
