About the Event
Through the BC Tripartite Education Agreement (BCTEA), British Columbia, Canada, and the First Nations Education Steering Committee agreed to work together on a strategy and policies to support the negotiation and implementation of Local Education Agreements (LEAs).
LEAs are agreements between one or more First Nations and a provincial school board that outline the terms for the purchase of education services by the First Nation for their students living on reserve and attending public schools. LEAs can also be important accountability mechanisms that First Nations can use to build better relationships with school districts and achieve better outcomes for First Nations students in public schools.
The purpose of this provincial gathering is to support First Nations who have LEAs with an update on recent developments and resources relating to LEAs.
Agenda Highlights
- Identifying key content of the updated provincial LEA template and how it relates to provincial BCTEA commitments
- Finding and interpreting relevant education and student data to make informed and timely decisions
- Sharing experiences and best practices of increased accountability and relationship-building with local School Districts
- Learning more about the Targeted Indigenous Education Funding
- Understanding the implications of Bill 41 – 2019: Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act in First Nations education
- Recognizing other provincial and federal commitments related to the draft Ten Principles and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action
- Reviewing the outcomes and lessons learned for a second year of implementation of the First Nations Student Transportation Fund
